Joint Statement by UOPLF,
OLF, IFLO, and OLC
A
new wave of mass arrest and harassment in Oromia
Successive
Ethiopian regimes oppressed, exploited and harassed the Oromo people.
The scale and magnitude of oppression against the Oromo people by
the incumbent Wayane regime has no parallel. This government actively
engaged in systematic genocide
and ethnic cleansing against the Oromo people.
Oromos
are physically being killed just because of their ethnic background.
Besides looting and siphoning all moveable properties and resources
of Oromia to Tigray region, the Wayane have burnt the natural environment
of Oromia. Prominent Oromo individuals, intellectuals, civil servants,
businessmen/women, students and teachers are being killed, arrested,
kidnapped, and harassed for no crime committed. Oromo sons are used
as mine sweepers and human wave in the unjust wars that the Wayane
regime generated to consolidate its rule and to suppress the struggle
oppressed nations and nationalities in the country and to destabilize
the region as whole
The
Wayane regime is employing the old tactic of divide and rule and
is consciously instigating animosity between the Oromo people and
the neighboring peoples. In less than ten years since it came to
power Wayane had made futile attempts to create conflicts between
Oromo and Issa, Oromo and Ogaden, Oromo and Sidama, Oromo and Gedeo,
Borana Oromo and Garri Oromo. To saw seeds of conflict between Oromo
people and neighboring peoples, the Wayane purposely demarcates
Oromo territory to be included in neighboring peoples. This is a
double-sided crime against the Oromo people. Wayane is planting
mines that will explode in the future if not held carefully and
it is also meant to chop up Oromia piece by piece and finally erase
it from the map. The latest development is the total detachment
of Finfinnee (Addis Ababa) which is the umbilical cord of Oromia.
Currently,
on the issue of Finfinnee, the Wayane has resorted to the use of
force to intimidate and silence the anger of our people. There is
a new wave of mass arrest and harassment all over Oromia& Wayane
regime driven by desperation and hopelessness is arresting prominent
Oromo individuals, intellectuals, businessmen/women and students
to quell the peaceful demonstration and resistance of our people.
The evil intention of this action is to incapacitate the struggle
of Oromo people to gain what is forcefully taken away from them.
The current wave of mass arrest and harassment has targeted influential
Oromo individuals. Many are arrested in the past week and tens
of thousands are being tortured in prisons by the brutal Ethiopian
security forces with a special hatred for the Oromo people. Today
our people are living in an atmosphere of total fear and terror.
There is no rule of law and justice in Ethiopia.
We
condemn this action of Wayane and demand the release of all Oromo
arrested without any crime committed. We want to tell the Wayane
that arrest, harassment and intimidation of Oromo people won't curb
the progress of the struggle. Likewise, we want to warn those Oromo
currently working with the government that the next wave of mass
arrest will definitely target them. The only way-out of this condition
is by intensifying the national liberation struggle and freeing
Oromia from all forms of oppression
We
hereby appeal to the international community to stand by us in our
struggle for freedom and justice. We call upon all governments humanitarian
organizations and peace loving individuals to exert all necessary
pressures on the Wayane regime to respect the human rights of the
Oromo people and to release all Oromos who are languishing in the
prisons of Ethiopia. Above all, we call upon the Oromo people to
strengthen their unity and step up their covert and overt resistance
against Ethiopian government and show to the enemy that harassment
arid tenor cannot deter the Oromo people from its struggle.
