The
fifth annual soccer tournament of Oromo community teams in North America
will be held here in Toronto from July 29 to August 5. The tournament
is being organized by Oromo Sport Federation in North America (OSFNA)
and about a dozen teams from Canadian and US cities are expected to
participate.
A source
close to OSFNA said preparation is underway to make the event enjoyable
and memorable for the teams as well as for their fans. The source
who did not want to be identified said a number of cultural activities
have been planned in addition to the sport events.
Unrelated
to the soccer tournament, one important event that will be held
in Toronto later this month is the annual conference of Oromo Studies
Association (OSA). The two day conference will bring together Oromo
scholars from around the world to discuss a variety of issues relating
to the Oromo people as well as other peoples in the Horn of Africa.
Scholars from Somalia, Sidama, Ogadenia, Afar, Eritrea, Europe and
North America are also expected to attend and make presentations.
Furthermore,
all Oromo political organizations have been invited for the conference
and they are expected to attend and make public presentations on
the state of their respective organizations and the Oromo people's
struggle for self-determination.
